Using your benefits at Hennepin Technical College
Student Responsibilities
Every semester you plan to use your benefits, you must notify the School Certifying Official by submitting a Veterans Enrollment Certification-Deferment Request eForm.
What does the deferment form do? Upon completion of the deferment form, the SCO will receive notification that you plan to use benefits, and your certification can be processed. The business office will then provide a tuition deferment. This ensures the tuition due date is pushed until the end of the term.

All new students are required to complete orientation. Once you have been admitted you will receive an email with orientation instructions. - Complete Placement Testing

In addition to your military benefits, you may also qualify for federal and state financial aid. An active FAFSA application is required to apply for the MN GI Bill. - Request Official Transcripts
Hennepin Technical College is an open access institution. Transcripts are not required for admission to the college. To ensure proper advising and use of your military benefits, we encourage requesting transcripts from all prior institutions.
Your prior military experience MAY count for academic credit:
• Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Marines: JST transcript request
• Air Force: CCAF/Air University transcript request
GI Bill® Benefits:
Chapter 33, Post 9/11 GI Bill®
- Individuals who served on active duty on or after September 10, 2001, for at least 90 days; spouse/children may qualify through Transfer of Entitlement.
Montgomery GI Bill ® (MGIB- Chapter 30)
- Members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard who are on active duty or have been separated from active duty with an honorable discharge.
Montgomery GI Bill ® (MGIB-SR- Chapter 1606)
- Members of the reserve components of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard; members of the Army National Guard and Air National Guard.
Survivors’ and Dependents’ Education Assistance (DEA- Chapter 35)
- Child/spouse of a veteran who is permanently and totally disabled from service-connected causes
- Child/spouse of a veteran who died in service or who died of service-connected causes
- Child/spouse of another qualifying veteran or serviceperson, such as one currently missing in action or captured in the line of duty.
Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E- Chapter 31)
- Veterans with a service-connected disability rating of at least 10% or Servicemembers with a memorandum rating of at least 20%. This is not specifically an education benefit, but an approved rehabilitation plan that may include college/university courses.
Federal Tuition Assistance
You may qualify for Department of Defense (DOD) Tuition Assistance (TA) for all our degree programs if you are actively serving in the Armed Forces.
FTA policies and funding limits are specific to each branch of service. Please contact your unit/education service officer (ESO) for questions.

Minnesota Education Benefits
Undergraduate students may be eligible to receive up to $5000 per academic year. There is a lifetime maximum of $15,000.

- Register for classes
Hennepin Technical College School Certifying Officials can only certify courses that are required for your chosen major. Check your DARS to make sure you are in eligible courses.
For questions or help with registration contact your Academic Advisor. - Complete the Enrollment Certification-Deferment Request Form.
After you have successfully registered for classes, completed the Veterans Enrollment Certification-Deferment Request eForm.
This form must be completed every semester you plan to use benefits!
If you are using Federal GI Bill ® benefits, attach your Certificate of Eligibility (COE). If you are using Federal Tuition Assistance attach your Tuition Assistance Request (TAR). - Verify your Enrollment with the VA
If you are using any federal GI Bill ® you are required to verify your enrollment each month to receive your benefit payments. To verify enrollment you have the following options available:- Text: To verify via text, recipients can opt-in when they begin using their benefits to receive a text message from VA on the last day of each month to confirm their enrollment.
- Email: If beneficiaries choose to opt out of text verification, they will receive monthly enrollment verification messages by email.
- Online: Beneficiaries can verify their enrollment through VA’s online tool.
- Ask VA: Beneficiaries can verify through Ask VA by sending a message with their enrollment dates.
- Non-Standard Terms
The VA requires schools to report enrollment separately for each course that begins or ends more than one calendar week after the start or end of the term. These courses, which are shorter than the length of the term, are called nonstandard terms.
Nonstandard terms affect the pay you will receive because benefits are paid from the first scheduled date of the class for the term in which you are enrolled. For this reason, the enrollment level reported to the VA for your benefit amount may be less than the enrollment reported on your school transcript.
Specific questions regarding your benefits, such as which one is best for you, should be directed to the VA.
FAFSA
Regardless of whether you are using your education benefits, we highly recommend all students apply for FAFSA.
The completion of your FAFSA will allow you to be reviewed for grants and loans at the federal level AND grants at the state level. (i.e.: Pell Grant, MN State Grant)
Your federal GI Bill ® benefits will not be reduced if you receive federal financial aid. This means you could end up netting money if you are eligible.

MN GI Bill
The Minnesota GI Bill® was established in 2007 to provide post-secondary financial assistance to eligible Minnesota veterans and service members as well as eligible spouses and children of deceased or severely disabled eligible Minnesota veterans.

Minnesota Veteran Education Assistance
Veteran Education Assistance provides Veterans with a one time $750 grant for tuition for those who have exhausted (through use) all of their GI Bill ® benefits.

Hennepin Technical College has signed the Department of Defense (DOD) Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Understanding and is approved to process DOD Tuition Assistance (TA) for all of our degree programs. TA benefits are available to qualifying individuals currently serving in the Armed Forces. Each service branch has specific TA policies and annual funding limits. Return of Tuition Assistance (Unearned TA Policy)
Students who use Tuition Assistance are expected to remain enrolled in the course for its entire duration. If a student using TA withdraws or stops attending, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of the benefit that was originally authorized. To remain in compliance with the Department of Defense’s policy, Hennepin Tech will return any unearned TA funds through at least 60% mark of the course on a prorated bases. The amount of unearned TA that is returned is based on student-initiated date of withdrawal or last date of attendance noted by the instructor.
After 60% of the course has passed, TA will not be evaluated for a return to the DOD.
As an institution, we will bill the DOD after 60% of the course has passed to reduce the amount of incorrect TA funds being disbursed by the DOD to Hennepin Tech. We will only bill for the amount the student earned given their enrollment.
Schedule for Returning Unearned TA
This return schedule applies to any course regardless of its duration.
Unearned TA funds will be returned on a prorated basis, depending on the length of the course and the amount of the course the student completed.
To determine the amount of TA that needs to be returned the institution will determine the date the withdrawal or date of last attendance, count the number of days the student completed and then divide that by the total number of days in the course to determine the percentage of TA that was earned by the student.
Example: The student enrolled in a course with a scheduled duration of 30 days. The withdrawal was submitted on the 14th day. The institution would perm the calculation to determine how much TA was earned by the student’s attendance:
(14 divided by 30 equals 46.6%. 47% of the TA authorized was earned by the student, which means 53% of what was authorized will be returned to the DoD).
If the student completed more than 60% of the course, the full amount of TA authorize is considered “earned” and no refund is needed.
Information the Department of Defense Asks Us to Share with Prospective Students
The College Scorecard is a consumer planning tool and resource to assist prospective students and their families as they evaluate options in selecting a school.
The College Navigator is a consumer tool that provides school information about tuition and fees, retention and graduation rates, use of financial aid, student loan default rates, and features a cost calculator and school comparison tool.
The Financial Aid Shopping Sheet is a model financial aid award letter designed to simplify the information that prospective students receive about college costs and financial aid so they can easily compare institutions and make informed decisions about where to attend school. For a personalized Financial Aid Shopping Sheet, log in to eServices with your StarID and password, then click on the “Financial Aid” link. The Paying for College website contains a tool that can be used by prospective students to compare detailed financial information for up to three schools at a time. This site also includes general information about financial aid and financial literacy.
If you are receiving Tuition Assistance and are seeking access to access services counseling, contact Access Services.
Consistent with Minnesota State Procedure 5.12.1, a student who is a member of any branch of the U.S. military, who is unable to complete a course/courses due to a call to active duty shall be offered the following course cancellation and/or completion options.
- Withdraw and refund: A student may withdraw from one or more courses for with tuition and fees have been paid and may receive a 100% refund of tuition and fees. The student may either receive a retroactive drop from courses or “W” grades. A student receiving financial aid who chooses this option is required to repay 100% of grants and loans (not work study) that have been disbursed for the term.
- Delay Completion: An instructor may agree to assign the student an incomplete (an Agreement of Incomplete Form needs to be completed) even though less than 75% of the coursework has been completed. If, in the instructor’s judgment, a student has completed sufficient coursework to earn a grade of C or better, the instructor may assign credit (a grade) for completion of a course.
- Complete the Course: The student may continue and complete the course for full credit. Class sessions missed by the student due to performance of active military service must be treated as an excused absence and cannot be used to adversely impact the student’s grade or standing in the class. Students are not excused from completing assignments/coursework during this time.

Prior learning refers to learning gained from a variety of sources outside the classroom. Students who can demonstrate equivalent college-level knowledge and skills may receive college credit for prior learning from experience and training.

The Veterans Resource Center (VRC) is open! The VRC is located in Room H165 on the Brooklyn Park campus and Room H160 on the Eden Prairie campus. The center provides computers with study areas and a lounge with a kitchenette, television, and video games.
