Selecting a Major
Your major is the specific program of study you choose, such as a degree, diploma, or certificate, that aligns with your career and education goals. Most students declare a major during the admissions process. If you are unsure about your choice or want to make a change, our Student Success Advisors and Career Counselors are available to help.

Award Options
Hennepin Tech provides a variety of awards designed to fit your learning style, timeline, and career goals. From hands-on certificates to two-year degrees, each pathway equips you with the knowledge and skills to succeed in today’s workforce or continue your education. Whatever path you choose, these awards are designed to help you grow your skills, prepare for the workforce, and advance your career.

Degrees
Associate in Science (A.S.) Degree
Prepares students to transfer to a four-year program in a related scientific, technical, or professional field. May also prepare students for employment. Includes general education courses selected from at least six of the ten goal areas of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum. Typically 60–64 credits.
Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree
Prepares students for specific occupational areas requiring two years of education with a general education component. Typically 60–72 credits.
Diplomas
Prepare students for positions typically requiring one to two years of education with general education included. Typically 31–72 credits.
Certificates
Advanced Technical Certificate
Prepares students for career advancement or enhancement requiring less than one year of education. Requires previous related work experience or graduation from a related program. Typically 9–30 credits.
Occupational Certificate
Prepares students for positions requiring less than one year of education. Typically 9–30 credits.
Non-Degree Seeking
Visiting Students
Students not seeking a degree, diploma, or certificate may take courses by registering as a visiting student. Students are responsible for meeting all course requirements.
Placement Testing
Students who do not complete placement testing before enrolling may be required to do so after attempting four credits.
Changing to Degree-Seeking
Non-degree seeking students who later wish to declare a major must apply to the college (if not already done) and submit a Change of Major eForm.
Please note: Non-degree seeking students are not eligible for financial aid.
